ER Trip

Last night Evelynd went to bed around 7 after refusing to take an afternoon nap.  She woke up screaming at about 9:30.  I couldn't comfort her so I brought her downstairs to get her teething tablets, listen to some Toddler Tunes, and share some popcorn with us.  Dassow Daddy gave her a little taste of his peanut butter.  A few minutes later, Evie's eyes were red and puffy and she kept rubbing them.  I took her upstairs again and her face was getting puffier.  I decided to call our pediatrician's triage nurse.  She asked me if Evie had rashes on any other parts of her body.  We checked and, yes, her torso looked like she had hives on it.  We were told to go to the Emergency Room immediately.

We showed up around 10:30 p.m. at Salem Hospital's ER where Evelynd was rushed to the front of the queue.  She was breathing fine.  Lung capacity was 100%.  There was no fever.  So then they were a little less worried, which was good.  She even got a red toe like Cousin Fox did for his first Christmas.

Once we finished with triage we waited in the lobby for a few minutes while they got our room ready.  They had a bunch of tables with toys that Evelynd liked to bang on.  We went into our room and met Nurse Nancy.  Evelynd immediately threw up on her and Dassow Mommy.  Then she threw up some more.  And some more.  Nurse Nancy called it "cute throw up" and said she usually got much grosser throw up all over her.  I don't wanna know.  Because Ev was covered in throw up, she had to use my nursing cover as her new outfit.

(Thanks for the Pillow Pet, Aunt Ami.)
When the Dr. Walterscheid came in, he said that Evelynd was "beautiful."  She immediately started flirting.  The doctor said that she had a nut allergy and would need to avoid them from now on.  Total bummer.  Then he bragged to Nurse Nancy that Evelynd liked him because she didn't throw up on him.  Nurse Nancy then brought in the oral steroid medication.  Evie immediately threw up again on Dassow Mommy and Nurse Nancy.  Bummer.  That meant she had to get the shot.  She cried a lot and gave Nurse Nancy a dirty look.  Lucky doctors get to waltz out of there and let the babies hate the nurses.

While we waited to be discharged, Evelynd practiced her walking skills.
We got home around 1 a.m.  Evie went to bed, but was up by 7 as usual.  She seemed back to normal (although sleepy) today.  She ate normal meals and kept all her food down.  Her rashes and puffiness are gone.  We ran some errands and played.  We set up a visit with her pediatrician for next week to get more testing done.  This is a bummer, but definitely something we can handle.

More updates about our little (non)Peanut when we get them.

  1. Oh that is so scary! I'm glad she's okay! Bummer that she's allergic to peanuts though. I hope there's nothing else!
